What this test measures
This is Typing Gauge's general employment assessment. It is designed to feel like the typing you would do in an office, warehouse, clinic or contact centre, not a word game.
- Net WPM — your speed after uncorrected errors are taken into account.
- Accuracy — the share of your keystrokes that were correct when you typed them, including mistakes you went back and fixed.
- Consistency — how evenly you typed across the whole test.
- Job Readiness Score — a 0–100 benchmark combining all three against the Typing Gauge practice target of 40 WPM at 95% accuracy.
Tips for your best result
Read a word or two ahead rather than looking at each letter. Keep your eyes on the passage rather than your hands, and correct mistakes as soon as you notice them — an uncorrected error costs you a full word of net speed.
Choosing a duration
One minute is a good warm-up. Many employers use three- or five-minute tests because they show whether you can hold your pace, so try a longer test once you are comfortable.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the Typing Gauge typing test free?
- Yes. The typing test is free, unlimited and does not require an account. An optional free account lets you keep your history and track progress.
- When does the timer start?
- The timer starts when you type the first character, so you can read the start of the passage and get ready without losing time.
- Can I paste text into the test?
- No. Paste is disabled and large blocks of auto-inserted text are rejected so that every result reflects real typing.
- Is my score an official certification?
- No. Typing Gauge results are practice benchmarks. They do not guarantee employment and are not an industry certification; each employer sets its own requirements.
