What Is KPH? Keystrokes Per Hour Explained
2 September 2026 · 4 min read
KPH stands for keystrokes per hour. It's used for data entry and numeric (10-key) work, where "words" don't make sense.
How it's calculated
KPH = total keystrokes ÷ hours elapsed. A 3-minute test is 0.05 hours, so 462 keystrokes in 3 minutes is 462 ÷ 0.05 = 9,240 KPH.
On Typing Gauge's 10-key test, each value counts its characters plus one keystroke for Enter. On the data entry test, each completed field counts its characters plus one for moving to the next field.
Typical ranges
| KPH | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 6,000 | Developing |
| 6,000–8,999 | Competent |
| 9,000–11,999 | Strong |
| 12,000+ | Very fast |
Employers commonly look for 8,000–12,000 KPH depending on the role — always alongside high accuracy.
KPH and accuracy go together
A fast KPH with lots of errors isn't useful: a wrong digit in an invoice amount is worse than a slow correct one. Typing Gauge reports accuracy and errors next to KPH and weighs them equally in your score.
