How to Improve Typing Accuracy

3 September 2026 · 6 min read

Accuracy is the fastest way to raise your net WPM and your Job Readiness Score. Here's how to improve it.

1. Slow down by about 10%

Most errors come from rushing. Drop your pace slightly and aim for 98% accuracy. You'll often find your net WPM goes *up*.

2. Keep a steady rhythm

Typing in bursts leads to mistakes on the fast bits. Aim for an even, almost metronomic pace. Typing Gauge's consistency score tells you how steady you are.

3. Read slightly ahead

Keep your eyes a word or two ahead of your fingers. This reduces hesitation and the mistakes that come with it.

4. Use the right fingers

If you look at your hands or use only a few fingers, errors are much more likely. Return to the home row (ASDF / JKL;) and practise the correct finger for each key, even if it's slower at first.

5. Fix errors immediately

Correcting a mistake straight away takes less time than going back later. In a test, an uncorrected error costs you a full word of net speed.

6. Practise your problem characters

Numbers, capitals and punctuation cause most errors in workplace text. The Administrative Typing practice is full of them.

7. Use accuracy-only practice

Accuracy Training won't accept a wrong key — you must type the correct character to continue. It quickly trains you out of "typing through" mistakes.

8. Check your setup

Sit upright, keep wrists straight and relaxed, and use a keyboard you're comfortable with. Tension leads to errors, especially in longer tests.
