Numeric Data Entry Test

Finance, payroll and logistics roles often test how quickly and accurately you can key numbers — amounts, dates and reference codes.

Numbers are less forgiving than words

When you type a sentence, a reader can often work out a small typo. A wrong digit in an amount or account reference simply produces the wrong answer. That's why numeric tests tend to have higher accuracy expectations.

What you'll be asked to enter

  • Whole numbers such as quantities and codes
  • Decimals and currency amounts
  • Dates in DD/MM/YYYY format
  • Reference numbers with hyphens

Keypad technique

Rest your right hand on the numeric keypad with your middle finger on 5 (it usually has a raised bump). Use your index finger for 1-4-7, middle for 2-5-8, ring for 3-6-9 and decimal, thumb for 0 and little finger for Enter.

Frequently asked questions

What is KPH?
Keystrokes per hour — the number of keys you press in an hour. It's the standard speed measure for numeric and data entry work.
Do I need a numeric keypad?
A keypad helps a lot for speed, but the Typing Gauge 10-key test also works with the number row or a mobile number keyboard.
